Duo Duo is one of the most prominent poets from present day China and the most original and innovative writer of his generation. He started writing poetry during the upheavals of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) in China and won prestigious independent poetry awards in 1986, 1987 and 1988 before leaving China on June 4th, 1989. He was in exile for 15 years as a result of being a journalist during the 1989 student movement and speaking to the UK press while doing a reading in London in June, 1989, until Hainan University in South China offered him a teaching position in 2004. His poetic styles changed before, during and after his exile days and was highly regarded by his fellow poets and poetry researchers. He has been generally considered as the most accomplished poet in contemporary China. He was awarded Chinese Literature Award from the South China Media Group in 2004, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature from the US in 2010, two achievement awards in poetry in China in 2014, and the New Golden Age Poetry Award in Mexico in 2016.
